When travelling abroad one might be required to obtain a Fingerprint Certificate Police Records Checks (Police Clearance).   Before the document can be used abroad it might need to be notarized first before it can be authenticated by Global Affairs Canada and then legalized by the Embassy or Consulate of the Country you intend to travel.  Although the Canadian document authentication and legalization process is straightforward for someone who works in this industry it can be frustrating and costly for the average person.  Global Affairs Canada even recommends that one consider using an authentication legalization service or process server to facilitate the processing of the documents.

What are Fingerprint Certificate Police Records Checks?

These documents (a Fingerprint Certificate or Police Records Check) can be obtained directly from the RCMP headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario.  A fingerprint certificate or police records check can also be obtained from any provincial police detachment across Canada.  However, not all police documents are treated the same.  For example, a police document that is issued by any other provincial police force other than RCMP headquarters, in Ottawa, will require notarization.  In the event that notarization is required our office has access to a number of notaries that can be of assistance.

In terms of legalization of the authenticated document, one should also consult the Embassy or Consular Office in order to determine if a notarized document is acceptable for use abroad.  As each diplomatic mission is different it is most important to obtain the correct information in advance so as to reduce cost and potentially eliminate any delays.
