Document Authentication and Legalization is required in the event that you need to use of a Power of Attorney document, for personal or business purposes, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The authentication and legalization process if often referred to as Attestation or Apostille. This process is straightforward but it can be confusing and time consuming for the average person who is not familiar with the process.
In order to have your documents processed, the Power of Attorney document must first be notarized by a Canadian Notary Public. The notarized Power of Attorney document is then authenticated by Global Affairs Canada (formerly known as Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade). Once authenticated, the document must be legalized by the UAE Embassy.
Although this is a straightforward process, and one could manage it on their own, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind. Firstly, what is the timeline that you have to deal with the processing of the document. Generally speaking, it takes Global Affairs about thirty calendar days for processing if the document is sent to them either by courier or mail. One also has to be mindful of the requirements of both Global Affairs Canada and the UAE Embassy. Lastly, if there is a problem with the document they will be returned unprocessed which can result in further delays and increased cost.
In most cases, it is recommended that one hire a third party service provider, like our office, to assist with the processing of your documents. Not only can we save you valuable processing time but we assist in making sure that you have all of the necessary documentation. The added benefit of using Capital Authentication is that we offer a number of different processing options to suit the requirements of any prospective client.
The diplomatic mission of the United Arab Emirates now enforces jurisdiction. In other words, depending upon where the document originates within Canada will dictate whether one has access to the Embassy in Ottawa or the Consulate in Toronto.
