Power of Attorney Documents and the UAE Embassy
Document Authentication and Legalization is required in the event that you need to use of a Power of Attorney document, for personal or business purposes, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The authentication and legalization process if often referred to as Attestation or Apostille. This process is straightforward but it can be confusing and time-consuming for the average person who is not familiar with the process.
What is required?
In order to have your documents processed, the Power of Attorney document must first be notarized by a Canadian Notary Public. The notarized Power of Attorney document is then authenticated by Global Affairs Canada (formerly known as Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade). Once authenticated, the document must be legalized by the UAE Embassy or the UAE Consulate in Toronto.
Can I process my power of attorney on my own?
Although this is a straightforward process, and one could manage it on their own, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind. Firstly, what is the timeline that you have to deal with the processing of the document? Generally speaking, it takes Global Affairs about thirty calendar days for processing if the document is sent to them either by courier or mail. One also has to be mindful of the requirements of both Global Affairs Canada and the UAE Embassy. Lastly, if there is a problem with the document, they will be returned unprocessed, which can result in further delays and increased costs.
What are my options to have my Power of Attorney authenticated and legalized?
