Certain Provincial Government issued documents, such as birth, marriage, death certificate, might require authentication by Global Affairs Canada before they can be used in another country.  The affixing of the Global Affairs stamp to the document is know as authentication.  It is also referred to as Attestation.  This is the first step is being able to use the document in another country.  The second step in the process is having the document stamped by a particular diplomatic mission.  This stamping by an Embassy or Consular office is referred to as legalization.

Should you find yourself in this situation it is strongly recommended that you contact the relevant Provincial vital statistics office and order the required birth, marriage, death certificate.  It is typically very easy to re-order original replacement birth certificates, marriage certificates and death certificates.  In our FAQ’s section, we have taken the time to list all of the Provincial and Territorial contact information for the various vital statistics offices.  These documents can be sent back to you or they can be sent to an authorized third party such as our office, Capital Authentcation.
