Certain Provincial Government issued documents, such as birth, marriage, death certificate, might require authentication by Global Affairs Canada before they can be used in another country. The affixing of the Global Affairs stamp to the document is know as authentication. It is also referred to as Attestation. This is the first step is being able to use the document in another country. The second step in the process is having the document stamped by a particular diplomatic mission. This stamping by an Embassy or Consular office is referred to as legalization.
